Introduction

Classification of Esters

Esters can be categorized based on the type of acid involved in the esterification process as well as their molecular structure.

  • According to the type of acid involved in esterification, esters are broadly classified into inorganic acid esters and organic acid esters. Inorganic acid esters are formed through the substitution of the hydroxyl group in an inorganic oxyacid with an alkoxy group while organic acid esters result from the dehydration of organic carboxylic acids and alcohols.
  • According to their structural arrangement, esters can be further divided into aliphatic, aromatic, and cyclic esters. Aliphatic esters consist solely of single bonds, while aromatic esters feature conjugated rings within their structure (Fig. 1). Cyclic esters, also known as lactones, exhibit a 1-oxacycloalkan-2-one structure (−C(=O)−O−), which is obtained through the reaction of alcohol with cyclic acids.

  • Hydrolysis of Esters: Esters undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water and an acid or base catalyst to produce a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. This reaction is particularly significant in the breakdown of esters in biological systems and in organic synthesis.

  • Reduction of Esters: Esters can be reduced to form primary alcohols using reducing agents such as lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4) or sodium borohydride (NaBH4). This reaction is useful in the synthesis of alcohols from esters.
